Best known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien was also an Oxford University professor of linguistics. His glossary for Kenneth Sisam's anthology of Middle English poetry and prose was his first published book, and proved such an indispensable adjunct to Sisam's compilation that the two works were subsequently published together in a single volume.
