Alistair Cooke was born in Manchester, England, and educated at Cambridge, Yale, and Harvard. Since moving to New York in 1937, he has written on every facet of American life, first as special correspondent for the Times of London and later as the Guardian's chief American correspondent, a position he held for twenty-five years. His weekly BBC radio broadcast, now in its fifty-fourth year, is the longest-running one-man series in the history of broadcasting and is heard in fifty-two countries around the world. Alistair Cooke became known to millions of Americans as host of the pioneer cultural television program Omnibus, and later as the host of Masterpiece Theatre. His many books include Alistair Cooke's America--a national best-seller--A Generation on Trial, Six Men, The Patient Has the Floor, and The Americans. In 1973, to honor "his outstanding contribution over many years to Anglo-American mutual understanding," he was made an honorary KBE (Knight of the British Empire). He lives in New York City and Long Island and is married to the portrait painter Jane White.
