Photographs cut out of newspapers and erased of their documentary clarity take on a haze of associations in Matt Bryans' installations. Using a simple pencil eraser Bryans converts the world's news into a collage that threatens to spread like algae, and speaks more pictorially of shifts in tone and color, than of famine or murder or sporting victory. Bryans is interested in the media's tendency to flatten an individual's experience, and in turn figurative representation may be loosened, creating a suggestive atmosphere. Born in 1977, Bryans currently lives and works in London. In 2005 his work was featured in exhibitions at The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Tate Modern and Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York. He recently completed a large-scale commission for Salon 94 in New York.Bryans, Matt is the author of 'Matt Bryans', published 2007 under ISBN 9789086900299 and ISBN 9086900291.
