Richard N. Côté majored in political science and journalism at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He spent six years in the U.S. Air Force, and the next eight years conducting historical research and writing in Wisconsin. In the fall of 1979 he was recruited by the South Carolina Historical Society, where he worked for four years before turning to writing full-time. Since the mid-1980s he has conducted extensive research into South Carolina and Southern biography, social history, plantation life and culture, and architecture. He draws from all of these wells of information for his books. In 2004 he was awarded the Bobby Gilmer Moss Award in History by the Daughters of the American Revolution for his outstanding contributions to history. Dick lives in Mt.
