Orange was formed in 1734 from Spottsylvania County and comprised an area on both sides of the Blue Ridge Mountains out of which has subsequently been formed more than 36 counties. In 1743, Fredericksburg County was formed from Orange and in 1745, Augusta County was formed. In 1749, Culpeper County was formed, which in turn in 1793 had Madison formed from it and in 1838 Greene County was formed from Orange.
