Clementina is twenty-six years old in 1774, when the English dressmaker who trained her dies. She was promised the business, but finds it has been left to James Hunter who lives in Pennsylvania. Determined to obtain the shop she was promised, she travels to Philadelphia to ask James for it. The ship she sails on is owned by James and carries indentured servants. She is appalled to see the dreadful conditions these passengers endure. When she meets James, he isn't what she expected at all. Discovering his shipping agent is a villain, Clementina travels inland to warn James, with two seamen on her trail. Clementina and James race back to Philadelphia only to find that his ship has already left. James obtains a fast schooner to chase it. While Clementina waits for James to return, the American Colonies begin their struggle for Independence. Clementina opens a gown shop and becomes successful. James returns and fights with the Patriots. Clementina must decide whether to return to England, or become an American.
