Rumiko Takahashi, born in 1957 in Niigata, Japan, is the acclaimed creator and artist of Maison Ikkoku, InuYasha, Ranma 1/2 and Lum * Urusei Yatsura. She lived in a small student apartment in Nakano, Japan, which was the basis for the Maison Ikkoku series, while she attended the prestigious Nihon Joseidai (Japan Women's University). At the same time, Takahashi also began studying comics at Gekiga Sonjuku, a famous school for manga artists run by Kazuo Koike, author of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. In 1978, Takahashi won a prize in Shogakukan's annual New Comic Artist Contest and her boy-meets-alien comedy Lum * Urusei Yatsura began appearing in the weekly manga magazine Shonen Sunday. Takahashi's success and critical acclaim continues to grow, with popular titles including Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha.
