Richard Connaughton entered Sandhurst in 1960 directly from school and won a scholarship to study history at Oxford. He has had a varied career, including seven years with the Brigade of Gurkhas in Kowloon where he observed the Vietnam War and the Cultural Revolution in China. He has been an instructor at the British Army Staff College in Australia. He resumed his education at Cambridge, where he earned a post-graduate degree in International Relations. He earned a Ph.D. from the Center for Defense and International Security Studies, Lancaster University. He retired from the British Army in 1992 with the rank of Colonel.
