Like other American industrialists such as Carnegie and Frick, William and Anna Singer used their wealth to collect art, establish museums and lend support to artists and socially motivated projects. Between 1900 and 1940 the Singers collected more than 3,000 paintings, works on paper, sculptures and other artefacts. The collection is now spread across four locations: The Singer Museum, Laren; Villa Dalheim in Noorse Olden; the West-Noorse Museum of Applied Arts, Bergen, and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts - the first Museum the Singers founded. This is the first time a detailed academic study has been made of the background and motives behind the collection of these remarkable benfactors. Loving Art chronicles their cosmopolitan lifestyle and gives an insight into the beginnings of the collection, which includes works by Auguste Rodin, Paul Gauguin, Max Liebermann, American Impressionists such as Walter Metcalf and Childe Hassam, as well as Masters from The Hague and Laren Schools. TheSchretlen, Helen is the author of 'Loving Art The William and Anna Singer Collection', published 2007 under ISBN 9789040082344 and ISBN 9040082340.
