Ovid was a Roman writer of love elegies (Amores), then experimented with the imaginary letter, mock didactic verse (Ars Amatoria), and collective narrative relating disconnected stories inside a large historical or chronological frame. Little was heard of Ovid until the Renaissance where he was revered as the great preceptor of courtly love.
