Imogene Joyner was born on December 1, 1928 in the Campground Community of Tipton County, Tennessee. She had four brothers and two sisters. Imogene graduated from Lambuth College with a BA degree, and Scarritt College with a MA degree. She then went to the Belgian Congo as a missionary under the auspicious of The United Methodist Church. Upon returning to Memphis, Tennessee, after the evacuation of all American citizens from the Belgian Congo, Imogene was like a displaced person. She was a professional Girl Scout; an executive director of the Girls' Club of Memphis; and then a biology teacher for the Memphis City Schools until her retirement in 1989.
