Alev Lytle Croutier is the author of the internationally acclaimed nonfiction books Harem: The World Behind the Veil, which has been translated into twenty languages, and Taking the Waters. This is her first book for young readers. Her other novels, Palace of Tears and Croutier was the founding editor and editor-in-chief of Mercury House, a San Francisco publishing company. She has written and directed films in Japan, Europe, and the Middle East, as well as in the United States, where she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship Ms. Croutier was the commentator of the Canadian Film Board series The Powder Room and BBC's Mozart in Turkey and The Reign of Women. Her work has appeared in literary and popular magazines as well as anthologies. Ms. Croutier was born and raised in Turkey.
