Learned and Applied Soil Mechanics Out of Delft

This book is a tribute to Professor Dr Arnold Verruijt, on the occasion of his retirement as professor in soil mechanics at the Technical University of Delft on 25 January 2002. It is divided into five chapters, areas of special interest of Arnold Verruijt: groundwater flow, consolidation, numerical methods, geodynamics and geostatics. In this tribute a summary is presented on Verruijt's scientific contributions. Amongst unprecedented achievements, the inclusion of pore-fluid compressibility in the theory of consolidation, the flushing effect in interface flow, the Noordbergum effect in groundwater recovery, the concept of hysteretic damping in geodynamics, and analytical solutions of elastic deformations in tunnelling are to be mentioned. He was one of the first to develop practical geotechnical computer programmes. At present, he is a pioneer in using the Internet for education.Barends, F. B.
