Inspector Jim Chu began his career with the Vancouver Police in 1979. Positions he has held include: patrol constable, school liaison officer, robbery squad detective, patrol sergeant, and duty officer (watch commander). He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of British Columbia. He has taught criminology at the college level.
