Japan Soul of a Nation

John Carroll grew up in Los Angeles. He has lived in Japan for nearly a quarter of a century, mostly in Tokyo, but also for long periods in Kyoto, Kamakura and Yokohama. He worked for an English-language newspaper for several years and, as a freelancer, has written hundreds of articles, including regular columns Michael Yamashita has been a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine since 1979. His assignments have brought him to such wide-ranging locations as Somalia, Sudan, New Guinea, England, Ireland and New Jersey. Fluent in Japanese, he has traveled the length of Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu. He has also received awards from the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), the New York Art Directors Club and the Asian-American Journalists Association (AAJA).
