According to Graymont, the Hiawatha of Longfellow's poem is most likely based on Hayenwatha, who encouraged his people to participate with other villages in a plan for peace & cooperation. His efforts led to the "Great Peace," but the arrival of European settlers led to the decline of the Iroquois. This is a well-organized book.
