This book employs a new framework to identify cases of technological dynamism across a range of countries and industries. They vary from the recent growth of the computer software industry in India to the aircraft industry in Brazil. They touch upon technological dynamism in manufacturing and service oriented industries, and they consider how the effect of clustering, or the geographic agglomeration of firms engaged in the production of related and complementary items, can make sectors more technologically dynamic. Most discussions on technology development in the context of developing countries have a formalistic way of grouping such countries together. As such they tend to to overlook the increasing dissimilarities between those that have the potential to catch-up and even create new technologies and those that do not. Against this background the aim of this book is to highlight instances of success and to point to important factors behind such success. The papers in this book were initially presented at a conference organised by the United Nations University Institute for New Technologies (UNU/INTECH) in The Netherlands. The Dutch Research School for Resource Studies for Development (CERES) and the European Association for Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) both sponsored the conference.Mani, Sunil is the author of 'Innovation, Learning And Technological Dynamism Of Developing Countries', published 2004 under ISBN 9789280810974 and ISBN 9280810979.
