Allen Gerlach holds a doctorate in history and a law degree from the University of New Mexico. He lived in Peru and Ecuador for several years, and taught Ecuadorean, Andean, and Latin American history at the Centro Andino in Quito as well as at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He has written primarily on Latin America for newspapers, magazines, and academic journals.
