Basketry scholar Ralph Shanks, M.A., is vice president of the Miwok Archeological Preserve of Marin (MAPOM). He conducted over two decades of research with renowned basketry scholar Larry Dawson, museum anthropologist at the Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Ralph has also worked extensively with Native American cultural leaders, weavers and elders. Shanks served as research associate in anthropology at Santa Barbara Museum of National History, did basketry research under the auspices of the Hearst Museum at the British Museum in London, the Museum of Man in Paris and has continued his basketry research at over fifty museums across the U.S. During this time, Ralph and his wife Lisa spent seven years working with over 100 tribal offices researching their book, The North American Indian Travel Guide, a guide to contemporary Native American cultural activities.Shanks, Ralph is the author of 'Indian Baskets of Central California Art, Culture, And History' with ISBN 9780930268183 and ISBN 0930268180.
