Indelible Ink : Adventures of a Baby Boomer

Timothy J. Fields was born in 1946 in Wichita, Kansas. In 1956 he moved to Salina, Kansas, with his parents and four brothers. Fields earned a Bachelor of Science in journalism from Kansas State University and a Master of Religious Education degree from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. During college and seminary he worked as a reporter and photographer for the Daily K-State Collegian and the Manhattan Daily Mercury. He was a photographer and reporter during a summer internship for the Salina Journal. Fields also served as news director for Midwestern Seminary and then for two years as reporter and photographer for the North Kansas City Dispatch and Platte County Dispatch (Townsend) newspapers while in seminary. Fields married Navy nurse Linda Walls in 1969, and in 1971 they moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he was a magazine and products editor for the Southern Baptist Brotherhood Commission. Linda was a staff nurse and later director of nursing for Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In 1980 Tim and Linda and their three daughters moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Tim became director of communications and then vice president for product development for the Southern Baptist Christian Life Commission. In 1988 he became associate executive director of the Southern Baptist Education Commission. That same year he established Fields Publishing Inc. Since 1996 Fields has worked for the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools as director of communications and managing editor of the Southern Baptist Educator. He also serves as president of Fields Publishing, which publishes books for churches, individuals and other organizations. Fields is a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where his wife is church administrator. He teaches a senior men’s Sunday School class and is an ordained deacon.
