American born, Father John Travis received his Lic. Theol. from the University of Athens and the diploma of Byzantine ecclesiastical music from the Hellenikon Odeion in 1970. Ordained in 1971, he served the Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral as an assistant parish priest and the rural missions of the Denver diocese. He received his Th.D. in historical theology from The Iliff School of Theology and his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Colorado. In 1978 he was invited to succeed the late Reverend Dr. George Tsoumas at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. Father Travis was appointed associate professor of church history in 1982. He also has been visiting professor of Orthodox theology at The Iliff School of Theology and Andover Newton Theological School. Honored by the Church, Father Travis was elevated to father confessor in 1974 and archimandrite in 1983. Participating in scholarly and ecumenical symposia, he has served as the Orthodox observer of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to the Lutheran World Federation conference in Vancouver (1982), as lecturer at the seventh national workshop on Christian-Jewish relations and Christian unity in Louisville, Ky.
