Gillian Banner was born in Liverpool in 1956. She began study for an LLB at Manchester University in 1974, and worked for the Spastics Society (now Scope) and with other voluntary and charitable agencies in Manchester and Lancashire before moving to Derbyshire in 1980. Having been employed as a social worker by Derbyshire County Council during the 1980s, she returned to full-time study in the department of English literature at Sheffield University in 1990 where she completed a BA, a Masters and a PhD, awarded in 1997. In addition to teaching English literature at Sheffield University, Gillian works for her constituency MP, is the lay member for the High Peak and Dales Primary Care Group.
