Karen Spears Zacharias's work has won dozens of awards, including the 2002 C. B. Blethen Award for Distinguished Feature Writing. An early draft of Hero Mama was awarded first place in the short story category by the Georgia Writers Association. Zacharias also retains active ties to the Vietnam veterans community: she has lectured around the country at numerous veterans events, serves on the national advisory board of the Virtual Wall and the Orphans of War Foundation, is a contributing columnist for The Veteran, the magazine for the Vietnam Veterans of America, and is a member of Sons and Daughters in Touch, a national organization for adult children of servicemen killed in Vietnam.
