Helens Story continues the life of the Van Arlens that began in No Matter, Together. Helen has moved her children to the city. The house they live in now is handsome and more than adequate for them. She rents the attached efficiency apartment to a young woman who becomes part of the family. Helen meets and marries a sardonic man and the children are introduced to a life with a stepfather. They find their life was better without him. Victoria leaves the house after a horrific family fight on Christmas Eve. Rob and Johnny, the Van Arlen childrens only stepbrother, become great friends. Mollie finds a job after she was nearly raped at a home where she was babysitting.
