HC is fiction only because, during the time frame of this story, no African American would be allowed to accomplish as much as HC did. He owned two thriving funeral homes, a hotel with popular cabaret style supper club on the ground floor that catered to all races, and he and his partner managed a very profitable numbers game in the Black community, which brought them great wealth. That wealth enabled HC to live a life that others in the African American community of Detroit, Michigan, could only imagine. HC married a beautiful young Chinese woman and had two beautiful children. Both HC and his wife, Sue Ming, had an abiding concern for others less fortunate in their communities and did what they could to help during the economic downturn of the late 1920s and 1930s.
