Clement Greenberg was born in the Bronx in 1909, and was educated at Syracuse University. He became an editor of Partisan Review in 1940, art critic of The Nation in 1942, and associate editor of Commentary in 1945. His books include Art and Culture, the four-volume Collected Essays and Criticism, and the posthumous Homemade Esthetics.
