Charlotte F. Speight is the author of Make It in Clay (1997) and Images in Clay Sculpture (1983). She studied painting and ceramics in Paris, at the Yale School of Fine Arts, and at Cranbrook Academy of Art; she is also a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute in sculpture. Her visual arts background also includes theater set and costume design, magazine art direction, and teaching art. In addition to writing in the arts, Speight has traveled widely, interviewing ceramic artists and lecturing on ceramics in the United States, Mexico, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and England. She is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics. John Toki is a member of the faculty at the California College of Arts and Crafts and co-author of Make It in Clay. He served as technical advisor to the European Ceramics Work Center, the Netherlands, and has worked in the ceramics industry for thirty-five years, currently as president of Leslie Ceramic Supply Company, Inc., in Berkeley, California. Toki also maintains a career in sculpture and has completed numerous public art commissions. He has exhibited at the California Museum in Oakland, California; The Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; and at galleries in the United States and Europe. Toki has lectured in Turkey, Taiwan, and Canada and has visited artists' studios in Europe, Mexico, and Japan.Charlotte F.
