This book sets out guideline values for a large number of water contaminants relevant to the quality of drinking-water. The book also provides an explanation of how the guideline values should be applied, the criteria used in selecting the various chemical, physical, microbiological & radiological contaminants considered, a description of the approaches used to derive the guideline values, & brief summary statements supporting the values recommended or explaining why no health-based guideline value is necessary at present. Now in its second edition, the book has been considerably revised & expanded in the light of new scientific information, particularly concerning the health risk posed by chemical contaminants. Preparation of the revised guidelines involved the collaboration of over 200 experts from nearly 40 countries. The book is the first in a three-volume work. Volume 2, HEALTH CRITERIA & OTHER SUPPORTING INFORMATION, contains the criteria monographs prepared for each substance or contaminant. Volume 3, SURVEILLANCE & CONTROL OF COMMUNITY SUPPLIES, describes measures that can be used by small communities, particularly in developing countries, to safeguard their water supplies. Volumes 2 & 3 will be published in 1994.WHO Staff is the author of 'Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality Recommendations', published 1993 under ISBN 9789241544603 and ISBN 9241544600.
