William L. Ackerman earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in horticulture from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in Botany in the field of plant genetics from the University of Maryland. Now retired, he served as a research horticulturist at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. The author or subject of nearly 200 research papers, book chapters, and popular articles on plant breeding and culture, he resides in Ashton, Maryland where he continues his research and experimentation with hybridization of cold hardy spring and fall flowering camellias and development of commercially acceptable yellow flowering camellias. He has received numerous awards and certificates for his work including the Luther Burbank Award from the American Horticultural Society.
