Considered by many to be the preeminent Swiss writer, Gottfried Keller was born in Zurich in 1819. In 1834, he was expelled from school and pursued an abortive career as a painter. His first poems were published in 1846 in Zurich, where he was appointed Clerk to the Canton in 1861. In addition to Green Henry, composed between 1850 and 1853 and first published in 1855, Keller wrote several volumes of short stories and poetry.
