Kelly Stewart (B.A., Ph.D. (Nationality: U.S. American. Date of birth: May 1951. Sex: Female. Marital status: married; employed Dept. of Anthropology, UC Davis, Davis, CA 95616) received a B.A. in Anthropology from Stanford University in 1973 and then went to the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda to study wild mountain gorillas. She served as research assistant to Dian Fossey and subsequently carried out her dissertation work on the social development of immature mountain gorillas. She received her Ph.D. from Cambridge University. In 1981, Kelly Stewart and her husband, Alexander Harcourt , returned to Rwanda for two and a half years to run the Karisoke Research Center. During this time they carried out projects on gorilla social behavior, ecology and conservation. In 1987/1988, she and her husband conducted a survey of gorillas in Nigeria. Kelly Stewart has been a research associate at Cambridge University, writing articles and papers with her husband about their work on gorillas. She is now a research associate with the Dept. of Anthropology at the University of California at Davis. She edits the annual Gorilla Conservation Newsletter, Together with her husband she has published numerous articles in scientific journals and popular publications about her work on gorillas, has written book reviews for the New York Times and the Washington Post, and for several years wrote a science column for her local newspaper, the Davis Enterprise.
