Mahmood Mamdani, a third-generation East African of Indian descent, grew up in Kampala, Uganda, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1974. Since 1999 he has been the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government in the Departments of Anthropology and International Affairs, and director of the Institute of African Studies, at Columbia University. He taught at the University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania, Makerere University in Kampala, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa before coming to New York.
