Eva Gossman had a difficult and disrupted childhood in Slovakia and Hungary, and arrived in America the night that Harry Truman was elected President of the United States. During the next 12 years she learned English, worked as a secretary, completed high school and university at night, and earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. For a decade and a half she was a faculty member, first at Sarah Lawrence College, and then at Goucher College.
