Jeff Macnelly forged a dual career as a syndicated political cartoonist and as the creator of the comic strips SHOE and Pluggers, earning top honors in both roles. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1972, 1978, and 1985, and the National Cartoonists Society twice presented him with its highest honor, the Reuben Award. MacNelly also illustrated Dave Barry's syndicated column and was an accomplished painter and sculptor. He lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia with his wife, Susie, next door to a hog farm.
