Kathy Mays Smith has a bachelor's degree from The University of Texas and a master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. In addition to her regular job, she has had publications in several journals and has been a reporter, writer, and editor of a company newspaper Capt. Charles W. Mays, an Associate Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Purdue University in 1933, was called in the midst of the Great Depression to organize and command Civilian Conservation Corps camp, Company 1538. This outstanding camp located near Pineville, West Virginia is the subject of this book. Capt. Mays rose from Second Lieutenant in World War I to Colonel in World War II, during which time he commanded the 407th Field Artillery Group (6 battalions) in Europe. After the war, he served as Marshal of The Court at the Nurnberg Trials. Serving 35 years in the Army, he retired in 1952 as Director of Training for the Utah National Guard. He was inducted posthumously into the Fort Sill, Oklahoma O.C.S.
