Gabe G. Kubichek immigrated to Canada as a refugee after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. His involvement and the outcome of the revolution, prompted him to leave Hungary with his brother Matt, or be hanged. His dream finally became reality in the middle of December of 1956 he and his brother were headed toward the promissed land, the land of opportunity, to Canada, though his lifelong drean was to come to America. Gabe and his brother got separated in Vienna, Austria. Their last words were "See you in Canada brother". Not knowing the extent of the land. His first job as aminer in a copper mine in Rouyn-Noranda. He had no idea where his brother might be. A Hungarian language newspapwe in Toronto offered free advertising to find realatives, or people geing separated, such as Gabe and Matt. Two months later, Gabe received a letter from his brother, telling him he lived in Timmins, Ontario only 160 miles away, and was working in a gold mine. Gabe promptly quit his job in the copper mine, and traveled to Timmins to be with his brother. He also got a job in the gold mine, however they never saw gold whole working in the mine. Gabe and Matt got interested, and both became weekend prospectors. Later on both moved to British Columbia, where Matt got lucky and bought a gold claim in the Caribou region around Keithley Creek British Colimbia. Gabe decided to continue his education but frequently visited Matt and worked with him in his gold mine. Gabe finally experienced his dream and settled in the United States. He became a published author of "Dreaming of Amerika". He has retired and is now living in Stayton, Oregon, a short distance from Salem, with his loving wife, Helen.
