Gilles Villemure was born in Trois Rivieres, Quebec on May 30, 1940. Thirty years later, after a long road in junior hockey and the minor leagues that included brief visits to the NHL, he made the New York Rangers for good as Eddie Giacomin's backup. The duo debuted by doing all a goaltending pair can do in a regular season -- except win a Stanley Cup. It was the start of a seven-year NHL career for Villemure, the southpaw goalie who also had a passion for harness racing. Now 62 and still living on Long Island with his family, Villemure is still a recognizable face in the New York area -- a face that had a lot to do with some very special New York Rangers seasons.Gilles Villemure is the author of 'Gilles Villemure's Tales from the Ranger Locker Room', published 2002 under ISBN 9781582613086 and ISBN 1582613087.
