Karl Barth, one of the greatest theologians of the twentieth century, reknowned for his oppostion and Christocentric theology, was closely involved in the German Church conflict from the beginning. In 1933, he was a teaching Professor at Bonn University when the Nazis came to power. While there, he could equip the Church in Germany for resistance but when he was deported to his native Switzerland in 1935, he could only continue resistance from the outside. In the 1930s, Barth helped found the anti-Nazi Confessing Church with Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
