Advances in the field of genomics, including the human genome project, hold considerable potential for the prevention, diagnosis and management of many diseases, as well a offering new insights into human development and ageing. It is clear, however, that these developments raise a number of highly complex scientific, economic, social and ethical issues that must be taken into account in order to benefit disadvantaged populations in the developing countries.
