SUMMARY

This study describes how the United States Army, Europe (USAREUR), under the command of General Crosbie E. Saint, supported the armed response of the United States and the United Nations to Iraq's August 1990 invasion of Kuwait at the very time it was managing a fundamental transition in its fifty-year history of defending Central Europe. The study describes how U.S. Army leaders in Europe used the unique opportunities presented by a reduced threat in their theater of operations to make a major contribution to resolving a crisis in another theater. The lessons taught by this history about how military assets can be effectively applied in scenarios that were not anticipated, even by commands undergoing significant reorganization and reorientation, remain directly applicable to the myriad challenges faced by today's Army. Historians need access to accurate and complete information. General Saint opened his door to the author during sensitive meetings in his office, and his excellent team of generals in the Command Group and headquarters staff offices shared information freely in oral history interviews, provided copies of important documents, and encouraged their subordinates to do the same.Gehring, Stephen P. is the author of 'From the Fulda Gap to Kuwait U.S. Army, Europe and the Gulf War' with ISBN 9780898755244 and ISBN 0898755247.
