Edward L. Beach Sr. graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1888 and retired from the Navy in 1922 at the rank of captain. As secretary-treasurer of the U.S. Naval Institute, he published the first edition of The Bluejacket's Manual in 1902. He later became a professor of history at Stanford University. Thirteen of his books were published before his death in 1943. Edward L. Beach Jr. graduated from the Naval Academy in 1939 and retired as a Navy captain in 1966 after more than thirty years of service that included command of the USS Triton during a record-breaking, around-the-world voyage completely submerged.
