Born in Berkeley, California, in 1925, George Steck grew up in a family who appreciated the outdoors. His grandparents were especially fond of the mountains of California and, to this day, George uses their cook kit on his backpacks. After moving to New Mexico with his wife, Helen, and two sons in 1955, he got his first taste of the canyon country around the Colorado River on a 1956 Sierra Club float trip through Glen Canyon. The are so impressed him that he immediately bought an inflatable raft. For six summers, George took Helen and friends on two-week float trips through that beautiful canyon. George began hiking in the Grand Canyon after the diversion tunnels at Glen Canyon Dam were closed. He consistently spent four weeks a year exploring Grand Canyon on his own expeditions and with his family and friends. These annual adventures culminated in 1977 in a six-week hike from Lee's Ferry to Lava Falls with sons George and Stan, a niece, a nephew, and two other friends. In 1982, he made an eighty-day expedition from Lee's Ferry to Grand Wash Cliffs at Lake Mead, with his brother, Allen, and friend Robert Benson, as well as other friends who hiked sections. George resides with his wife in Albuquerque, New MexicoSteck, George is the author of 'Falcon Guide Hiking Grand Canyon Loops Adventures in the Backcountry', published 2002 under ISBN 9780762712083 and ISBN 0762712082.
