Clarence E. Macartney (1879-1957) was born in Northwood, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin and Princeton Theological Seminary. He served as moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1924. His pastoral ministries included the influential First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, from 1927-1953. Macartney was also a frequent conference, college, and seminary lecturer. He published more than forty books of sermons and Bible expositions as well as works on Abraham Lincoln and other historical subjects.
