Factorum Et Dictorum Memorabilium Libri I-VI

John Briscoe's new edition of theFacta et Dicta Memorabiliaof Valerius Maximus replaces that of K. Kempf, which was published in 1888. Kempf based his apparatus on the two oldest manuscripts known to him,Berne Burgerbibliothek 366 (A)andFlorence Med. Laur. Ashburnham 1899 (L). It is now clear, however, that account must also be taken of the next oldest manuscript,Brussels Bibliothegrave;que Royale 5336 (G). Correcting and building on the material collected by Kempf in his edition of 1854, Briscoe includes testimonia in the form of passages from other authors which refer to the matters discussed by Valerius, while hisindex nominummakes use of prosopographical research to correct and amplify Kempf's 1888 index.
