ETHICS: THEORY AND PRACTICE was first published in 1977 and now is into its SEVENTH EDITION. The book is about evenly divided into the two title topics, theory and practice, so that students are not only enlightened on ethical theory, but are encouraged to apply the learned theory to specific ethical problems (e.g. taking human life; lying, cheating, stealing, and breaking promises; business and environmental ethics, and bioethics, etc.). This book is very student- and instructor-friendly in that: The information it contains is very accessible because the language is clear and free from jargon. Every chapter has objectives stated at the beginning and a summary at the end. Chapters on theory have review and discussion questions. Chapters on practice include cases for each of the ethical problems discussed as well as discussion questions. There is a pivotal chapter between the theory and practice chapters that encourages students to establish their own ethical systems; it shows them how to do this by presenting assumptions about ethical systems and what an ethical system should contain. It presents the author's own ethical system and explains how he arrived at what he believes; the author encourages critical evaluation of his ethical system by instructors and students. There are appendices that show how the author has applied his own ethics to specific ethical problems, again encouraging critical evaluation of his applications. The author encourages further study by including supplemental readings at the end of each chapter. There is a glossary at the end of the book.Thiroux, Jacques P. is the author of 'Ethics: Theory and Practice', published 2000 under ISBN 9780130314086 and ISBN 0130314080.
