SUMMARY

Architectural Monographs No 29 Eric Owen Moss Eric Owen Moss, whom Philip Johnson has called the master jeweller of junk, has produced architecture that is consistently considered to be unconventional by even the most avant-garde designers of Los Angeles, who are hardly known for being conservative. His highly individual approach to structure and geometry as key elements in creating complicated interlocking spaces, sets his work apart as a substantial and innovative personal statement about the contemporary condition in LA, and the radical changes that have taken place since he started his practice there nearly two decades ago. Many of his projects are situated near his home base of Culver City, between Downtown and Pacific, which has become a testing ground for experiments in complex geometry which are reflected in his interiors. This is most dramatically expressed in his SPAR City complex, made possible by the purchase of the Southern Pacific Railroad Air Right and presented in detail in this Monograph as a utopian vision of what the city may become in the future. Several new, previously unpublished, residential projects such as the Aronoff and Lawson/Westen House are also included, demonstrating his unorthodox approach on a domestic scale. The singularity of his projects in this area, made possible by his close collaboration with developer Frederick Norton Smith, makes his work there one of the most extensive diagrams for a unified architecture yet realised in this region. As such it is a viable pattern for future growth. Architectural Monographs have enjoyed a positive critical response since first being launched over ten years ago, and have now been revised in an enlarged format. Often the first major publication on the work of a particular architect or firm, these books focus on individuals of international standing, who have been influential in education and practice. Including both built and unbuilt projects, each Monograph is an invaluable record of the works of the architect presented, and important source material for further study. Monographs in print include: Alvar Aalto No 4 Edwin Lutyens No 6 John Soane No 8 Terry Farrell No 9 Richard Rogers No 10 Mies van der Rohe No 11 Le Corbusier: Early Works No 12 Hassan Fathy No 13 Tadao Ando No 14 Ahrends, Burton and Koralek No 15 Daniel Libeskind No 16 Robert AM Stern No 17 Frank Lloyd Wright No 18 CFA Voysey No 19 Foster Associates No 20 Venturi and Scott Brown, On Houses and Housing No 21 Lebbeus Woods No 22 Morphosis No 23 Peter Pran of Ellerbe Becket No 24 Demetri Porphyrios No 25 Quinlan Terry No 27 Peter Cook No 28Moss, Eric O. is the author of 'Eric Owen Moss (Architectural Monograph, No 29)' with ISBN 9781854901903 and ISBN 1854901907.
