The author joined the Luftwaffe in October 1940 and subsequently qualified as a pilot. Commissioned as a leutnant in early 1942 Peter went on to train as a night-fighter and joined Nachtjagdgeschwader 5 (NJG 5) on June 1, 1943. After a period of acclimatisation he was shortly to claim his first victory when he downed an RAF Lancaster that was part of a bomber force of some six hundred aircraft sent to destroy the V1 and V2 installations at Peenemunde on the Baltic Coast. From this time Peter steadily increased his victory score and was soon to become an Experte (Ace). Peter survived a number of incidents when he had to bale-out or crash-land his aircraft.
