David P. Twomey graduated from Boston College in 1962, earned his MBA at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1963 and, after two years of business experience, entered Boston College Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1968. While a law student, he began his teaching career serving as Lecturer in Finance and Marketing at Simmons College in Boston. He joined the faculty of the Boston College Carroll School of Management in 1968 as an assistant professor and was promoted to the rank of professor in 1978. Professor Twomey has received numerous teaching and service awards at Boston College. He has written 28 books and numerous articles on labor, employment, and business law topics. He has a special interest in curriculum development, serving three terms as chairman of his school's Educational Policy Committee. As chairman of the Business Law Department for over a decade, he served as a spokesperson for a strong legal and ethical component in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Professor Twomey is a nationally known labor arbitrator, having been selected by the parties as arbitrator in numerous disputes throughout the country in the private and public sectors. In the context of impending nationwide rail strikes, his service includes appointments by Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton to six Presidential Emergency Boards, whose recommendations served as the basis for the resolution of these labor disputes. Professor Twomey is a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators. He is also a member of the Massachusetts, Florida, and federal bars.
