Dugald Stewart was appointed assistant professor of mathematics in the University of Edinburgh in 1772, aged only 19. He became Professor 3 years later, and after 10 years in the Mathematics Chair, moved to Edinburgh's distinguished Chair of Moral Philosophy. Many of Stewart's students subsequently achieved eminence in politics, law and the professions, most famously Viscount Palmerston who was twice British Prime Minister.
