In 1974, Elaine Brown became chairman of the Black Panther Party. The first woman to ever head a paramilitary organization in America, she ran for public office and traveled to North Korea, Vietnam, China, Russia, and Cuba. She studied classical music at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music and has recorded two albums of original songs for Motown.
